Top-ranked pediatric hospital Children's National Medical Center of Washington, DC, is using eClinicalWorks unified EMR and practice management software for its Children's IQ Network. Community pediatricians will be connected to Children's National Medical Center through their eClinicalWorks EMR. Also, the Children's IQ Network will use eClinicalWorks Electronic Health eXchange community health record to connect public schools, foster care programs, mobile medical vans, state immunization registries, commercial labs, and other regional healthcare providers. It will be open for additional area pediatricians to join.

Sevocity EHR clients can communicate with patients online

EHR provider Sevocity has launched the Sevocity Patient Portal, a secure Web portal that will allow its EHR clients to securely communicate with patients online. The Patient Portal is included in the newest Sevocity EHR product. Patients will receive e-mail notification of office communications and can access their information in the Patient Portal. Patients can also request prescription refills, schedule appointments, and make billing inquiries.

Webahn has launched an iPhone Web application for its online EMR service Capzule.com, it reports. Using Capzule, physicians can provide patient care while off-site. With the launch of the iPhone Web application, they can also connect with their office via their iPhone. Physicians can use their mobile devices to review patient files, view messages, check schedules, review charts, and write prescriptions.

Mobile social networking users to soar by 2012

The number of Internet users who access a social networking site from their mobile device will jump to 800 million in 2012, up from 82 million in 2007, according to an eMarketer report. The percentage of cell phone users who said they accessed a social network from their mobile device jumped 182% from September 2007 to October 2008, according to a study conducted by The Kelsey Group and ConStat. Social networking via mobile phone is more popular outside of the United States. Itsmy.com, a mobile-only social network based in Germany, has 2.5 million members. More than four out of 10 of its users have never used a computer-based online social network, according to a study it conducted this month.

Physicians who electronically prescribe medicine for Medicare patients will receive a bonus each time, beginning on New Year's Day. About 70% of the country's pharmacies use e-prescriptions, according to industry experts. Between 2% and 12% of American physicians are said to be currently ready to start e-prescribing. Medicare physicians who do not switch to electronic prescribing by 2012 will be penalized.

OptumHealth is providing a free portable PHR through its consumer health site, myOptumHealth.com. The PHR provides portability and sharing capabilities through collaboration between OptumHealth and Microsoft. Users can transfer their PHR information from an OptumHealth-managed health portal directly into a Microsoft HealthVault account. The OptumHealth PHR is free and available from myOptumHealth.com or from the private health portals that OptumHealth manages for employers and health plans. In December, OptumHealth launched myOptumHealth.com.

Children with Diabetes, a social network for families of diabetic children, gets almost half of its traffic from search, with 32,000 content pages optimized with words like "juvenile diabetes," according to eMarketer. J&J told eMarketer that the site's organic search is intentionally strong, since most online health info seekers start with search. Other strengths of the site include excellent content, real-time updates, and a comfortable, trustworthy environment, said the report.
